FIB, Chapter 6

“What’s wrong? You guys in trouble?” Bobby was now more alert and concerned with the tone in Alex’s voice.

“Sam went to meet up with a friend, but it was a trap. He was taken by a…” Alex hesitated again, still not used to using the term in a casual conversation, “vampire.”

“Where’s Dean?” Bobby set the book he was looking at down in the passenger seat of his car.

“He went to find Sam. I’m not sure how though,” she muttered the last part wondering how Dean found the address to where Sam was being held.

“What do you mean?”

“It’s a long story, but I think they might need your help. Sam’s in trouble. I don’t know how many vampires there are for sure, but whatever is going on, Sam is scared. And I know that very few things scare him.”

“How do you know he’s scared?” Bobby asked with skepticism in his voice.

“Bobby, you have to trust me,” Alex said, “It’s a long story, which we do not have the time for if we ever want to see Sam and Dean again. Dean gave me the address while he was driving there in case I needed to call you.”

Alex gave Bobby the address after she found the note she posted on her refrigerator.

“Alright, I’ll be there within the hour. I’m not too far from there,” he said starting up his car.

“Great, thanks Bobby.”

Alex sighed, hanging up the phone and running her hands over her face. She dropped her arms at her sides, hearing the garage door open followed by the sound of a car engine dying and a door closing.

Kyle walked through the door carrying his black jacket. “Hey,” he said while hanging up his jacket in a closet in the hallway.

“Hey, how was work?” Alex asked.

“Boring.” Kyle walked up to Alex and gave her a kiss. “So, did your cousin stop by?”

Alex nodded her head.

Seeing her stare at the floor, Kyle pulled her into a hug. “That bad, huh?”

“Kind of.” Alex hugged him back and quietly said, “Remember what I said last night about telling you what my problem was? And why I needed Sam’s help?”

Kyle straightened up a bit, realizing where she was going. “Yes.”

“I want to show you the journal.”

“Are you sure?” Kyle asked pulling away from the hug to look Alex in the eyes. “You don’t have to, I’ll understand.”

“I want to. I need you to know what’s going on.”

Kyle nodded his head, “Ok. Let’s go downstairs then.”

Dean slowly walked down the hallway to check the last room on the first floor. His back was held tight up against the wall as he went to reach for the door knob. Dean took a deep breath and quickly swung the door open, seeing nothing. He sighed, realizing Sam wasn’t on the first floor.

Just then Dean heard a scratching coming from upstairs. He gripped the machete as he made his way up the stairs. Once he was at the top he carefully checked each of the four rooms for his brother. Dean opened the third door slowly and saw a figure sitting in a chair facing the window. He scoped out the rest of the room and didn’t see anyone else. As he stepped in closer he could make out Sam’s shaggy hair, and quickly rushed over to his side.

“Sammy?” Dean let out a sigh of relief upon seeing his brother blink open his eyes.

Sam groaned trying to pull out of the rope, “Dean? How did-?”

“Hey, shh. Take it easy.” Dean started untying the rope around his brother’s wrists and ankles. “Do you know how many there are?”

“Seven… I think.” Sam reached a weak hand up to his neck, but Dean pulled it away.

“Shit,” he said seeing the wound on Sam’s neck. “You lost a lot of blood.” Dean reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a handkerchief and pressed it up against Sam’s neck to help control the bleeding.

Sam hissed when he felt the pressure on his wound.

“Come on, we need to get you to a hospital,” said Dean as he helped his brother get to his feet.

“Dean, we can’t. They have Luisa.” He pointed to the cornfield outside the window.

Dean saw the vampires pouring gasoline can around a post. He could barely make out Luisa sitting against the bottom of the wooden beam.

Turning back to his brother he asked, “Are you alright to fight them or I am gonna have to go solo on this one?”

Sam nodded his head. “I’ll be fine.”

Dean looked at his brother skeptically, but knew this was important to him. “Alright, come on.”

They made their way down the stairs and went out a door on the side of the house. Sam handed Dean the keys to the Impala as they headed towards their car. Dean wanted to make sure Sam had a weapon of his own.

As they were going through the trunk they heard a car driving into the woods near their location. Dean quickly closed the trunk and they both ducked, using the car for cover. Against Dean’s warning, Sam peered around the back end of the car to see who it was.

Alex pulled the wooden box out from under the spare bed in the basement. Once she grabbed the notebook, she handed it over to Kyle. He looked up at her to make sure it was still ok.

Once she nodded her head, Kyle sat down on the bed next to Alex. He started reading the journal. With each turn of the page, Kyle got more and more worried. He stopped after a few pages and looked over at Alex with wide eyes.

“Every night?” he asked quietly.

“Yeah.”

“And the pain…?”

Alex looked away, knowing he would take it hard. “It’s always painful. Dr. Kingston thinks that it feels real because I never got to say good bye to Dean, and I have all of this guilt built up inside of me. So in my dreams I get tortured by my emotions.”

Kyle looked down at the notebook, “Do you believe him?”

“No,” Alex shook her head. “It doesn’t feel right. I know Dean’s alive and I had a nightmare last night. And…” Alex trailed off.

“And?” Kyle waited for her to answer.

“I can hear Sam and Dean’s thoughts and this happened.” She hesitated before pulling back the collar of her shirt.

“What’s that from?” Kyle leaned in closer to get a better look at the bruise on her neck.

“I got it after I heard Sam scream in pain. I think he was bit on the neck. Ever since Dean died I’ve been getting bruises in the same places where he or Sam would get hurt.” She looked away again, not wanting to see his reaction. The thought of her husband thinking she was crazy was too painful for her.

“Alex. Hey, it’s ok.” He rest a reassuring hand on her shoulder, gently rubbing it.

“Ok?!” Alex looked back at him. “Aren’t you scared? Or worried about what this could be? Because I’m freaking out over here! Why are you so calm?”

Kyle was the one to look away this time as he sighed. He slowly dropped his hand from her shoulder and explained, “Because I know what is causing all of this.”

Alex opened her mouth, but she didn’t know what to say. She closed her mouth back up and thought about what he had said. “How do you know what the cause is?”

“Because your dad told me before he died.”

Dumbfounded, Alex asked, “My dad? What did he tell you, Kyle?”

Kyle turned to face Alex, folding his other leg up on the bed. He put the journal down and placed his hand on her knee. Deep down he knew he couldn’t lie to her anymore, so he decided now was the best time to tell her the truth. “He said that… you’re cursed.” He paused to wait for her to response.

“Bobby?” Sam asked standing up.

“Bobby?” Dean asked Sam, and stood up to see Bobby getting out of his car.

“You boys ok?”

Dean looked over at the blood on Sam’s shirt, and shrugged looking back at Bobby. “We’ve been in worse shape. Let me guess, Alex called you?”

“Yeah. Said you boys might need help with a vampire nest,” he said pulling out his own machete and a knife soaked in blood. Knowing Bobby, Dean and Sam both knew that it was dead man’s blood.

“Yeah, we could probably use and extra set of hands on this one. You sure you’re going to be ok?” Dean asked his brother, who was holding back a groan.

“I said I’ll be fine, Dean.” Sam still pressed the handkerchief up against his neck.

“Alright, let’s go.” Dean knew his brother was lying to him, but there was no time to argue. If they vampires were really going to burn the field, then they didn’t have much to time for arguing.

Sam followed Dean and Bobby into the cornfield, ducking so he wouldn’t be seen. Dean put an arm in front of Bobby signaling to him that he saw one of the male vampires standing a few yards in front of them. In total there were seven vampires surrounding the post that Luisa was tied to.

Bobby moved off to the left, while Dean and Sam moved closer to the vampire. Dean raised the machete and nodded at Sam to show he was ready. Sam pulled back the tall stalks, allowing Dean a clean shot at the vampires head. After the head fell off, Sam quickly caught the body easing it to the ground. They heard another swing and saw another vampire go down, revealing Bobby standing behind him.

The boys moved over to the next vampire and were able to decapitate it without much trouble. All was going well for them. In fact it was going too good.

Sure enough on their way to the next vampire—who Sam recognized as Matt—they heard a snap come from Bobby’s direction. Matt and Kate and the two other vampires turned and spotted them. Matt simply lit up a match and dropped it into the gasoline. Kate kicked Dean, knocking him to the ground, while two other vampires beat Sam and tried drinking more of his blood. The fire worked its way towards Luisa as the vampires finally left the boys on the ground, running towards the house, leaving them in the burning field.
